During the earlier world conflict, the United States had already observed how European countries used trained dogs in military operations for tasks such as guarding, delivering messages, and assisting troops in the field. Building on that idea, a civilian named Alene Erlanger launched a program called Dogs for Defense. Working alongside the American Kennel Club and dedicated breeders, the initiative recruited and trained dogs for military service.
By November 1942, the first Dogs for Defense graduates were sent to assist U.S. forces in North Africa. Although some were initially hesitant around combat environments, they soon demonstrated the value of structured training and careful handling. As demand grew, the U.S. military eventually assumed responsibility for training through its Remount Branch and related divisions.
March 13 was later chosen as the official date for K9 Veterans Day because it marks the birthday of the U.S. Army K9 Corps, established in 1942. The observance itself was proposed by Joseph White, a retired military working dog trainer who wanted to ensure these animals and their handlers received recognition for their service and sacrifice.
Today, military, law enforcement, and search-and-rescue K9 teams continue to evolve their training programs to match the challenges of modern missions. Each dog and handler pair undergoes specialized preparation designed for the tasks they will perform, from detection work to protection and disaster response.
